A N I M A T I O N

Star Wars: The Clone Wars, is a 3d computer animated television series. It was set between the events of Star Wars: Episode II and Star Wars: Episode III. We debuted this work on the Cartoon Network October 3rd, 2008.

I joined Lucasfilm Animation at Skywalker Ranch in the summer of 2006, working with senior leadership to help define the processes and teams needed to create this show. One of my most significant contributions to this process was in establishing 3d storyboarding as a production tool for animated television.

In collaboration with the Art Director and Episodic Directors, I supervised the composition of the environments and sets. This work started with rapid construction of low poly sets for pre-production and 3d storyboarding. Once the story was locked, these sets would go into final production.  This gallery shows a small sample of the amazing variety of worlds we created for the series.

In composing the overall aesthetic for this show, we chose to go with “noir “ lighting.  Strong silhouettes, pools of light, dramatic lights and raking shadows all create a strong separation between the subject matter and its surroundings.  Every scene had depth and volume with strong contrast in its subject.

This gallery provides examples of the work I supervised, in regards to color and light design, with the intent of accentuating the mood of the story.

Before an episode would go to broadcast, we would have one last pass to re-work the color and lighting of the show during the color grading process. This allowed us to smooth out any inconsistencies between shots and address any mood changes that George Lucas would want to make for the story. This gallery contains a sample of the work that I supervised.
